A Golden Retriever Puppy Led the Pony Into the Creek
Cold water sparkles around four little legs and four big paws. A golden retriever puppy stands in the shallow creek with his mouth open in a happy pant, while a shaggy brown pony wades beside him, nose stretched toward the pup. Droplets fly in the sunlight, and a mossy bank and an old wooden fence line the water behind them.
Golden Retrievers were bred as gundogs to retrieve birds from the water, and the love of splashing is part of their heritage. They tend to be friendly, eager to please, and good with families. Puppies of the breed are typically bouncy and mouthy, so they need lots of chew toys and good training. Many are natural swimmers, but young puppies should always be supervised near water, and a vet can offer advice about when it is safe.
Ponies, on the other hand, are generally careful around water and will test it with a hoof before stepping in. Many enjoy a gentle wade on a hot day, which helps cool them off. If a dog and pony are going to share a yard, the key is to introduce them calmly and keep a close eye on both. Fast, noisy play can startle a pony, so slow and steady is the way to go.
This pair have found their rhythm, though, and the creek is the perfect place to do it. The water is cool, the sun is warm, and no one is in a hurry to get out.
