A Bernese Puppy and a Pony Discovered the Biggest Pile of Leaves
A pile of golden maple leaves has collected against the garden wall, and two friends are nosing into it. A tricolor Bernese Mountain Dog puppy crouches in the leaves with his mouth open and his tail up, grinning at his companion. Beside him a shaggy tan pony lowers his head to snuffle in the pile, and the bare branches and old fence behind them say that autumn has arrived.
Bernese Mountain Dogs come from the Swiss Alps, where they worked as farm dogs pulling carts and guarding herds. They are known for their calm, affectionate nature and their tricolor coat of black, white, and rust. Puppies are fluffy and playful and grow into big dogs, so they benefit from early training and plenty of gentle exercise. They tend to prefer cool weather, which makes crisp autumn days a favorite.
Piles of leaves are a delight for dogs, who love the crunch and the smells. They are worth checking before play, though, since damp leaves can hide mold, thorns, or things that are not safe to eat. Some pets will taste what they find, so a quick look and a calm "leave it" can help. Ponies also like to nibble leaves, but not every tree is safe for them, and a vet or farrier can tell you which ones to avoid.
Right now, the leaves are just right. The pup bounces in and the pony sniffs along, and the afternoon goes golden. It looks like a perfect day for just being outside together.
