A Fluffy Ginger Cat Became the Puppy's Warmest Blanket
The hearth is cool and quiet, but the two sleepers in front of it are as warm as toast. A fluffy orange longhair lies curled on a chunky cream knit blanket, her eyes shut and her whiskers relaxed, while a small cream puppy tucks himself against her side with his nose resting near her chest. Above them, a brick fireplace holds a grate of logs, and a wooden mantel displays books, a little ceramic house and a trailing green plant. A grey sofa and a window glow softly in the background, giving the whole room a gentle, sleepy feel.
Many cats are drawn to fireplaces, wood stoves and radiators because they enjoy being warm, and a cat's preferred resting temperature is a bit higher than ours. That cozy instinct is fine, but it needs a few safeguards. A fireplace should have a sturdy screen, and pets should never be left alone near a lit fire, a space heater or a hot stove. Singed whiskers and burned paws happen quickly. Put a soft blanket or bed a safe distance from the heat, and your animals can enjoy the same comfort without risk.
The puppy is learning that the best way to stay warm is to find a friend with a big fluffy coat. The cat, for her part, is happy to be the heater.
