The Frost Grew on the Glass and Two Friends Watched It Spread
Frost has painted feathery white patterns on the window, and two cozy friends are enjoying the view from inside. A Bernese Mountain Dog puppy sits with his tri-color coat of black, white, and rust gleaming, his mouth open in a happy, panting grin. Beside him, Pepper the pony has folded his legs beneath him and gazes toward the glass with a scruffy, chocolate-brown mane falling over one eye.
Behind them, a bench is piled with blankets and pillows, a pair of boots stands on the floor, and a basket holds pine cones and rope toys. A coat hangs on a hook and soft light fills the entry. The room looks like a mudroom on a winter morning.
Bernese Mountain Dogs were bred as farm dogs in the Swiss Alps, and they have thick, long coats that handle cold well. They are gentle, loyal, and slow to mature, so puppies can stay clumsy and goofy for a long time. Large-breed puppies should avoid too much hard exercise on hard floors while their joints develop, and your vet can advise on feeding and activity. Ponies, as herd animals, usually do best with companions, and a calm puppy can be a welcome friend. Always supervise indoor visits, because hooves on hard floors can be slippery for everyone.
Outside the cold glitters and the frost keeps growing. In here, two friends are warm, together, and in no hurry.
