A Black Cat and an Old Tortoise Share a Sunflower Bench

AI imageblack cattortoisesunflowers

Sunflowers lean over a garden bed, and in front of them a fluffy black cat and a large old tortoise sit shoulder to shoulder. The cat's yellow-green eyes look off to one side, while the tortoise, whom we'll call Gus, faces the other way with the calm of someone who has seen many summers. A clay pot lies tipped in the dirt behind them, and a few fallen petals dot the ground. The cat's coat is dusty black and soft, and the tortoise's shell is a mosaic of tan and brown. They look like a pair of old neighbors sharing a bench.

Tortoises are among the longest-lived land animals, and many species can live for decades with good care. They are cold-blooded, so they depend on warm sun to get active and cool shade to rest. A pet tortoise generally eats mostly leafy greens and weeds, with fruit only as a rare treat, and needs fresh water. Cats, on the other hand, are curious about anything that moves slowly, so introductions should be supervised. A cat's claws and teeth can hurt a tortoise, and a tortoise can nip, so it's smart to give each animal an escape route and a safe corner. Talk to your vet about the right diet and habitat.

The sun climbs, the petals nod, and neither neighbor is in a hurry to go anywhere.
