A Ruby Spaniel Kept One Paw Near the Bunny All Evening
Under an apple tree heavy with fruit, a ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel stretches out in the cool grass with one front paw stretched toward a little brown bunny. The dog's long, silky ears fall around her face like a shawl, and her dark eyes follow the rabbit with a gentle, protective look. A few fallen apples dot the ground, and a string light glows above them in the branches as the day winds down.
Cavaliers are known as one of the sweetest-tempered toy spaniels. They were bred to be lap companions, and most of them are happiest when they are near their people or another friendly face. That soft nature is one reason they often get along with other pets. If you have a rabbit and a dog sharing a yard, keep a few things in mind. Always give the rabbit a safe spot to retreat to, supervise their time together, and watch for fallen fruit. Apples are fine in small pieces for many pets, but seeds and cores are best cleaned up, and a fruit tree sheds plenty of it. Shade matters too, since both dogs and rabbits can overheat on warm days.
The bunny seems to know she is safe. She sits close enough to feel the dog's warmth, ears upright but relaxed, nose twitching at the breeze. Nobody here is in a hurry. It is the kind of lazy evening when the only plan is to lie in the grass and let the apples keep falling.
