A Black Cat and a Bunny Said Hello With One Careful Sniff
The living room is quiet, and a sleek black cat leans forward to sniff a gray lop-eared bunny's nose. Her yellow-green eyes are wide and her whiskers are forward, while the bunny holds still with her ears hanging and her dark eyes calm. A potted plant, a woven basket and a knit throw sit in the sunny corner of the room behind them.
A gentle sniff is how many animals say hello. Cats have an excellent sense of smell, and rabbits also use their noses to learn about the world. When a cat and a rabbit meet, a slow nose-to-nose sniff is a hopeful sign, but it does not mean it is safe to leave them alone. Cats are natural hunters, and rabbits are prey animals, so even friendly pets need supervision. Provide the rabbit with a hiding place she can reach easily, and do not force interactions. Black cats are as loving as any other color, and they are often playful and affectionate. If you are introducing pets, your vet can help you plan the process.
The two of them are very still, and the quiet seems to stretch on. It is a delicate, hopeful moment in which a friendship could begin. Then again, it may be only a polite hello, and that is just fine. A soft breeze through the window stirs the curtain, and still neither of them moves, each waiting politely to see what the other will do.
