A Cavalier Spaniel Met the Ducklings Nose to Beak

Ears draped like silk curtains, a chestnut and white Cavalier King Charles Spaniel lowers her head to meet a line of yellow ducklings marching across the wooden floor. The nearest duckling is almost nose to nose with her, and the rest wait in single file behind it, standing on tiny orange feet. A woven rug, a houseplant, and a rumpled pile of clothes in the corner make it look like an ordinary lived-in room.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known as sweet, affectionate lap dogs that tend to get along with nearly everyone. They love company and may feel unhappy if left alone for long stretches. Ducklings are sociable, too, and will happily follow one another for safety. Even the gentlest dog can startle a baby bird with a quick movement, so careful, supervised introductions on a nonslip surface are a good idea. A gentle sniff is how most dogs say hello, so letting it happen slowly is a good sign.

What stands out is the pause. The spaniel waits with such patience that it feels like a polite greeting between two very different neighbors.

The first duckling takes a small, brave step forward, and the whole line shuffles along behind it. Whatever the dog is thinking, her calm brown eyes make it easy to believe that it is something kind.
