A Gentle Giant Peers Into the Hammock Where the Ducklings Sleep

AI imagegreat daneducklingshammock

A fawn Great Dane lowers his enormous head until his chin almost rests beside a rope hammock, and the hammock is full of ducklings. Seven of them lie lined up along its length, a neat yellow stripe of down against pale rope. Behind them stand a wooden railing and a window, and at the bottom of the frame a pair of garden boots and a flowerpot sit ready. Sunlight slants in through the railing and warms the old boards.

Great Danes are among the tallest dog breeds, and their calm, friendly nature has earned them the nickname gentle giants. Even so, their sheer size means they need space, sturdy furniture, and careful supervision around anything small. They are also a breed with a shorter lifespan than many smaller dogs, so regular vet checks matter. A rope hammock is a lovely spot for resting, though baby birds should not be left alone in one. A big dog also needs a big, sturdy bed so his joints get proper support.

The Dane's dark, soulful eyes are fixed on his tiny neighbors with great tenderness, and his long ears droop in a relaxed way. There is a lot of dog in this picture, and all of it is being very careful.

The ducklings hardly seem to notice how large their guardian is. They sleep on, and the whole porch rocks gently with them.
