This Cream Cat Is Guarding a Barn Door and the Crowd Behind It

AI imageexotic shorthairducklingsbarn door

A rustic brown door has swung open, and what's inside is a surprise: a dozen or so ducklings, jammed together in the shadows like a yellow tide waiting to spill out. In front of them sits a cream-colored cat with a flat face, round golden eyes and an expression of deep suspicion. He seems to be the doorman. His white paws are neatly placed on the wooden threshold, and he is watching something off to the side, as though deciding whether anyone is allowed through.

The Exotic Shorthair is often described as the Persian's short-haired cousin. It has the same sweet, round face and teddy-bear look, but a plush short coat that needs far less grooming. These cats tend to be quiet, affectionate and happy to nap near their people. Because of their flat faces, they can be prone to some breathing and eye issues, so regular vet visits are wise. Barns do make interesting places for ducklings and cats, but baby birds need warmth, dry bedding and protection from drafts, and they shouldn't be left alone with a cat that has hunting instincts.

The cream cat in this scene has the stern look of a doorman at an exclusive club. Behind him, the ducklings are bursting with curiosity and just waiting for the signal. Somebody has to keep order, and he has clearly volunteered.
