A Scruffy Rescue Puppy Found a Candy Cane and Wore It Like a Trophy
Wiry grey fur, a pink nose and a candy cane held proudly between his teeth: the scruffy mutt puppy looks like he has won the lottery. His ears flop in different directions, and he wears a red collar. The rug beneath him is scattered with toys, a blue plush star and a rope bone, and a cardboard box and a few pine cones lie nearby. The living room behind him is full of holiday clutter, and he is the happiest thing in it.
Candy canes are a risk for dogs. They contain a lot of sugar, and some sugar-free versions contain xylitol, which is very toxic to dogs. The sticks can also splinter into sharp pieces and the plastic wrapper can cause a blockage. If your puppy has eaten a candy cane, especially a sugar-free one, call your vet or a pet poison hotline. Mixed-breed puppies, often called mutts, can be wonderful companions, with unique looks and personalities. Many rescue dogs thrive with patience, routine and training. Offer him a safe chew toy to trade for the candy cane, using a calm voice and a treat. Rewarding a drop, rather than chasing him, teaches him that giving things up is a good deal.
He is clearly very proud of his find. A rescue pup with a prize is hard to beat.
