The Front Door Was Open, the Jack-O'-Lantern Was Lit, and Someone Was Dressed for It

AI imagekittenhalloween costumefront door

Spooky season has arrived, and this little white kitten is dressed for it. She sits on a woven doormat just inside the open front door, wearing a black knit sweater printed with a white skeleton ribcage and spine. Her ears are perked, her pale blue eyes are wide, and her pink nose is pointed toward the porch, where a small jack-o'-lantern glows in the golden evening light. A coat hangs on a hook behind her, shoes line up along the wall, and a few dry leaves have blown in across the floor, as though the first trick-or-treaters might arrive any second.

Costumes can be cute for photos, but kittens and cats often prefer to skip them. If you try a sweater, choose something soft and stretchy that does not restrict movement, breathing, vision or hearing, and avoid small buttons or dangling pieces that could be chewed off. Put it on only for a few minutes under supervision, and take it off right away if your kitten freezes, tries to hide or struggles. On Halloween night, an open front door is also a risk for escape, so many owners keep cats in a quiet back room while visitors come and go.

This kitten seems to be wearing her skeleton sweater with surprising dignity. Perhaps she knows she is the cutest little ghoul on the whole block.
