The Gift Wrap Pile Looked Empty Until It Started Breathing

Wrapping paper makes the softest pillow when you are a Ragdoll kitten. She has curled onto a heap of crumpled snowflake-patterned paper with her tail wrapped around her, ears tucked and eyes shut, a fluffy cream-and-grey bundle in the middle of the morning's mess. Ribbon, a pair of glasses and sprigs of greenery lie on the table behind her, and a blue blanket waits on the couch.

Ragdolls are large, semi-longhaired cats with a reputation for being gentle and relaxed, and many go limp when picked up, which is where the name comes from. They are usually sociable and enjoy company, but they still need play and mental stimulation. Because their silky coats can tangle, regular brushing helps, especially in the cooler months. Crinkly paper is irresistible to kittens, but ribbon, string, curling ribbon and tape are real hazards if chewed and swallowed, so clear them away as you go. If your cat seems to be straining, vomiting or refusing food after playing with string, contact your vet promptly.

The presents have been opened and the quiet has returned. A sleeping kitten in a nest of crinkled paper is a sight that makes the whole room go soft, and nobody is in a hurry to tidy up around her. Even the quietest corner of the house can hold the sweetest part of the day.
