A Black Newfoundland and a Snowman Became Fast Friends
Side by side in fresh snow, a black Newfoundland and a snowman look like old friends. The snowman wears a green plaid scarf, has a carrot nose and black button eyes, and the dog's thick coat has a fine dusting of snowflakes. Pine branches lie in the snow, and a gray house with a wreath on the door is visible behind them.
Newfoundlands love cold weather and are known for their gentle, loyal nature. Their double coat is thick and water-resistant, which makes snow a natural playground. Even so, long periods outside can be risky for any dog, so make sure your dog has shelter, fresh water and a way to warm up. Check paws for ice buildup and watch for signs of discomfort, such as shivering or lifting the paws.
If your dog likes snow, a snowman is a fun, safe way to share the activity. Just be careful with items like carrots, buttons, and sticks, since small pieces can be swallowed. Using dog-safe materials and cleaning up afterward keeps the fun going. Newfoundlands tend to be gentle with kids and other pets, which makes them great winter companions.
Together, the two look like a pair who have been waiting all day for the others to arrive. One is made of snow, the other is made of fluff, and both are right at home.
