A Border Collie Lifted an Ornament From the Lowest Branch
With a gold ornament held gently between his teeth, a black and white Border Collie looks into the distance with bright blue-gray eyes. A pine bough hangs overhead from the tree, and a house, a pair of boots and a pile of toys and blankets sit in the soft light behind him. The sparkle of the ornament and the glint in his eye suggest that this was a planned operation.
Ornaments are a real risk for dogs. Glass can shatter into sharp pieces, and a swallowed ornament can cause serious injury. If your dog grabs one, don't chase him, since that can turn into a game. Trade him for a treat, and examine his mouth for cuts. Hang fragile ornaments high and use unbreakable ones lower. If you're worried, talk to your vet.
Border Collies are among the smartest dog breeds, and they have a strong drive to work. They are often happiest when they have a job, such as herding, agility or learning tricks. Without enough activity, they can get creative with their own projects. Giving a Border Collie puzzle toys, training sessions and exercise helps keep ornaments safe.
He looks very pleased with his catch. Hopefully, a trade for a tasty treat will go smoothly, and the tree will be back to normal soon. A tennis ball might be the best swap for next time.
