A Calico Climbed Into the Stocking, and Only Her Face Is Showing

Only her face is visible, framed by a fluffy white cuff and a bright red knit stocking pulled up around her like a hood. The calico's patches of orange, black, and white are all gathered into one round, slightly suspicious expression, and her amber eyes look right at us. A sofa, a lamp, scattered boxes, and a lit tree glow in the background of the cozy living room.

Calicos are known for their three-color coats, which almost always appear on female cats because of how the color genes are carried. People often describe them as spirited and independent, though a cat's personality depends on the individual. This one, at least, seems to enjoy a good snug spot.

Cats love to squeeze into tight, soft spaces. It makes them feel safe, and it helps them hold in body heat. That is why boxes, bags, baskets, and even holiday stockings end up as cat beds. If your cat likes to hide in a stocking, make sure it is not decorated with small buttons, bells, or loose threads that she might chew or swallow, and keep an eye on her so she does not get stuck.

It is also a good idea to keep real stocking stuffers, such as candy, chocolate, and small toys, away from pets until they can be safely put away. For now, our calico seems perfectly happy. She has found the coziest gift of all, and she is not planning to unwrap herself anytime soon.
