This Hairless Kitten Is Wearing Bat Wings, and Doesn't Know What to Do With Them

Small black bat wings are strapped to the back of a wrinkly gray Sphynx kitten, and she sits on the porch with a look of wide-eyed surprise. Her ears are huge and almost transparent in the light, her green eyes are serious, and her skin has the soft folds of a baby elephant. Fallen leaves, a pumpkin, a pair of shoes, and some spooky branches fill the porch behind her.

Sphynx kittens are hairless or nearly so, and they have a warm, velvety feel to the skin. Because they have no coat, they can get cold quickly and are best kept indoors with plenty of cozy blankets. They are known as outgoing, energetic, and affectionate cats who like to be near their people. Their skin also needs gentle care, since oils can build up without fur to absorb them.

A costume for a tiny hairless kitten should be soft, light, and brief. Wings are charming but can catch on furniture or restrict movement, so a short photo moment is plenty. Keep an eye on decorations too, since fake branches and cobwebs can be a hazard if chewed. If your kitten seems stressed by a costume, take it off and offer a warm blanket. Your vet can give advice on keeping a Sphynx kitten comfortable.

For now, she has the look of a very small bat who has just realized it can fly. She keeps her paws planted, though, and the porch stays safely under her feet.
