The Border Collie Said She Was Just Helping With the Tree Lights
Lying on a patterned rug, a red and white Border Collie wears a loose tangle of glowing Christmas lights around her chest and legs. Her ears are alert, her brown eyes look off to the side, and the glow warms her white chest. The tree behind her is partly bare of lights, and a sofa, a plant, and a basket fill the cozy room.
Border Collies are some of the smartest dogs around, and they are famous for their energy and desire for a job. They are quick learners who enjoy training, herding games, and puzzle toys. Without enough exercise and mental work, a Border Collie may get creative on its own, which can mean unwinding tree lights or rearranging the holiday display.
Christmas lights are not safe for chewing. A dog who bites a cord can be shocked or burned, and swallowed bits of wire or bulbs can cause serious trouble. It is a good idea to unplug lights when you are away, to keep cords tucked behind furniture, and to put a gate around the tree if your dog is curious. If your dog chews on any wiring, call your vet right away.
This dog, however, looks perfectly calm in her glowing wrap. She holds still and waits for help, a patient, sparkling collie who is not at all sure how she got here.
