A Basset Hound Kept Company With the Freshly Lit Jack-o'-Lantern
The candle inside the jack-o'-lantern has just been lit, and a lemon and white Basset Hound sits beside it, ears so long they almost touch the doormat. His droopy eyes look off to the right, his nose is lifted slightly, and his front paws are neatly together. A dark blue door, a hanging tote bag, and a scarf on a hook make a cozy entryway behind him.
Basset Hounds are scent hounds, made to follow trails with their long, low bodies and big noses. They're known for being calm, friendly, and a bit stubborn, and their long ears help sweep scents toward their nose. They need regular ear cleaning, and because of their long backs and short legs, it's wise to prevent them from jumping off high furniture.
A lit jack-o'-lantern is a lovely sight, but a real candle is a risk around a dog, especially one whose tail or ears could knock it over. Many people choose a flameless LED candle for homes with pets. If you do use a flame, place the pumpkin high on a stable surface, away from curtains, and never leave it unattended. This Basset seems perfectly polite about it, keeping a respectful distance and sitting patiently, as though waiting for a good smell to arrive. A little breeze flickers the candlelight across his long face, and he sighs softly, the picture of patience.
