The Goldendoodle Puppy Was Caught With the Whole Candy Bag
Caught in the act: a cream Goldendoodle puppy sits in a hallway with a whole bag of colorful candy hanging from his mouth, and his eyes slide sideways as if checking who might be watching. His curls are soft and fluffy and a bit of the bag crinkles against his chin. Shoes, a green tote and a basket of leaves lie scattered behind him, and orange leaves dot the floor. It is a very sweet crime scene.
Candy is one of the biggest Halloween dangers for dogs. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, wrappers can cause blockages and some sugar-free candy contains xylitol, which is very dangerous for pets. If your dog gets into a candy bag, note what he ate and how much, save the wrapper and call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away. To prevent trouble, store treats on high shelves and teach children to keep their trick-or-treat bags out of reach. Goldendoodles are smart and food-motivated, which is why a good trade for a safe treat works well.
He may not look guilty, but he certainly looks proud of his loot. The best response is a calm trade, a dog treat for the candy bag, and a lot of praise. After all, a well-fed puppy is a happy puppy, and one with a safe snack is even happier.
