A Copper-Colored Kitten Sat Under the Halloween Garland, Eyes Wide
Warm light streams across a hardwood floor, and a ruddy Abyssinian kitten sits right in the middle of it, looking up at the camera. Above her hangs a garland of orange and black felt pennants, strung across the window. Around her are signs of a house deep in Halloween prep: a basket of laundry, a cardboard box of decorations, a small pumpkin, a tangle of ribbon, and a few orange leaves on the floor. Her coat shimmers copper and brown, with big pointed ears and bright golden eyes. We'll call her Rusty.
Abyssinians have a distinctive ticked coat, in which each hair has bands of different color, giving a warm, glowing effect. They are lean, athletic cats with a reputation for being busy and playful. They tend to enjoy puzzle toys, climbing, and games, and they usually bond closely with their families. A bored Abyssinian can get into trouble, so rotating toys and giving a high perch can help channel all that energy.
The garland brings up a good reminder about holiday decoration. Strings, ribbon, and hanging fabric are tempting for a playful kitten, and swallowed string can cause serious problems inside the digestive system. Hang garlands above where a kitten can reach, avoid dangling ends, and tidy ribbon scraps right away when you finish decorating. A scratching post and a few fresh toys near the decorations give her an alternative target.
Rusty seems more interested in the camera than the garland for now. The sunlight, the floor, and the pennants overhead make for a sweet little spot, and she looks right at home.
