A Dachshund Puppy in a Reindeer Sweater Heard Something Interesting
Head tilted, dark eyes round, and ears like two silky curtains, a red Dachshund puppy sits on a cream blanket in a cozy living room. Her knitted sweater is cream with a bold red reindeer across the side, and the turtleneck collar rises up to her chin. Behind her, a couch holds a green plaid throw, a rope toy and a plush squirrel, a mug with a spoon sits on a side table, and a little garland of pine and lights hangs by the window. Let's call her Cinnamon. She looks like she just heard the word treat.
Dachshunds are small dogs with long backs and short legs, and the puppy stage is a good time to start healthy habits. Because their backs can be prone to injury, vets generally suggest preventing them from leaping off the couch, using a ramp or steps, and supporting both ends of the body when you pick them up. Keeping them at a healthy weight is one of the best ways to protect that long spine, so measured meals and regular gentle walks matter. Long-haired Dachshunds also need brushing a few times a week.
A sweater can be a lovely addition in winter, especially for a small, short-legged puppy who gets chilly easily. Choose a soft one that fits snugly but not tightly, with openings that don't pinch the legs, and take it off when she comes inside to warm up, so she doesn't overheat. Check for loose threads that might get chewed and swallowed. A short walk in a warm sweater is a happy way to spend a winter day.
Cinnamon is perfectly snug, with her reindeer on one side and her curiosity on the other. The holiday season could hardly ask for a sweeter helper.
