A Little Maltese Puppy Waited on the Doorstep Under the Wreath
Sitting just outside the green front door, a small white Maltese puppy tips his head slightly and gazes at the camera with round black eyes. His fur is fluffy and a bit tousled, as though he has just been out for a romp. Above him on the door hangs a Christmas wreath, full of pine, red berries, pinecones, and a big burlap bow. A pair of black shoes sits on the porch to the right, and the house's pale walls frame the doorway. Let's call him Cotton. He seems to be waiting for someone to let him in.
Maltese puppies are small and need a gentle touch. They love company and often follow their people from room to room, which means waiting outside a door is a big deal for them. Gradually teaching a puppy to be comfortable alone for short periods, with a safe toy and a quiet space, helps prevent separation stress later. Because of their small size and thin skin, they need to be kept warm in winter, with short outings and a sweater if the temperature drops.
Front-door wreaths are lovely, but a puppy who is waiting at the door might be curious about them. Berries, pine needles, and ribbons on a wreath can upset his stomach if chewed, so keep it hung high enough that he can't reach it. On cold days, don't leave a small puppy outside alone, even for short periods, and be careful with the door to avoid it closing on a small tail or paw. A leash and ID tag are a must for door and porch visits.
Cotton waits patiently, a small white bundle on the step. Any moment now, the door will open and the warmth will rush out to meet him.
