A Cream French Bulldog Sat Under the Porch Lights, Looking Far Off
His big bat ears are fully upright and his dark eyes are focused on something just past the corner of the picture. A cream French Bulldog sits on the porch boards with a regal, patient posture, his wrinkled muzzle ever so slightly pushed forward. Strings of small orange lights hang along the porch roof behind him, a jack-o'-lantern grins from the left, and a pair of slippers, plants, and a basket of laundry fill out the clutter at the edge of the door. Let's call him Butter. He looks like he is weighing something important.
French Bulldogs are known for their gentle, clownish personalities and big ears, and they tend to be calm companions. They're not built for strenuous exercise, so short, relaxed walks are the best. Their short noses make it hard for them to cool off, and they can have trouble breathing in heat or humidity, so keep them somewhere cool on warm days. Owners often use a harness instead of a collar to protect the neck and throat.
String lights give a porch a warm glow, but a few safety points matter when dogs are around. Keep cords tucked away and out of chewing range, use outdoor-rated lights, and unplug them if you're not there to supervise. A dog who walks near lights might catch a cord and pull it down, which could bring a hot bulb or electric hazard with it. Raising them to the porch roof, like here, is a smart way to keep paws and teeth away.
Butter sits calm and quiet under the orange glow, a very patient kind of guard. Evenings are slow and golden, and he is in no hurry.
