A Tabby Parked Beside the Gingerbread House and Wouldn't Budge
Nothing about this brown tabby says relaxed. She sits upright on the wooden table, tail wrapped around her paws, golden eyes aimed off to the side, right beside a small gingerbread house with white icing and colorful gumdrops. A little Christmas tree glows in the background, and the kitchen is bright with winter sun. Crumbs of icing dot the table, and the cat's tail curls neatly in front of her like a tidy bow.
American Shorthairs are sturdy, easygoing cats with a long history as working mousers on farms and ships. They tend to be adaptable and friendly, and they usually do well in family homes. Their tabby pattern is common, but each cat's stripes are slightly different, like a fingerprint.
Gingerbread houses are a delight, but they are not a cat snack. Icing is mostly sugar, candy can be a choking hazard, and some treats, especially anything with chocolate or the sweetener xylitol, are dangerous for pets. If your cat shows interest, keep the house out of reach and call your vet if she eats any.
We can imagine her name is Maple. She is not guarding the house out of any greed, only out of duty, and she looks very sure that this is her job. The gingerbread house survives the afternoon only because of her watchful eyes, and she seems very pleased about it.
