The Gingerbread House Had One Very Curious Inspector With Giant Ears
On the kitchen table, a gingerbread house stands proudly with white icing, green and red gumdrops and a candy wreath on its door. Beside it sits a soft grey kitten with enormous ears and a slightly rippled coat, studying the whole thing like a tiny building inspector. A few crumbs and stray candies are scattered around, which suggests the inspection has already begun.
The Devon Rex is a breed known for its short, wavy coat, big eyes and large ears, giving it an elfin look. Devons are usually lively, affectionate and curious, and they like to be where the action is, which makes a freshly decorated table nearly irresistible. They also tend to enjoy being up high, so counters and tabletops are favorite perches.
Holiday baking calls for a bit of caution around cats. Icing, candy and gingerbread are not good snacks for them, and some sweets, especially anything containing chocolate or the sweetener xylitol, can be dangerous. Wrappers and decorations can also be a swallowing risk. Keeping treats in a closed container or behind a door when you step away is an easy fix, and your vet is the right call if she gets into something.
As for this kitten, she is content to look and not touch, at least for now. The gingerbread house is safe, though its front door may need guarding.
