The Real Thanksgiving Party Was Happening Under the Table
Down below the tablecloth, where the real Thanksgiving action happens, a Yorkshire Terrier puppy lies on the wooden floor with his chin lifted. Around him are a white sneaker, a brown boot, a grey sock and a pink slipper, and above him the table is loaded with green beans, rolls, mashed potatoes and cranberries. A few crumbs and bits of fluff are scattered on the floor, and warm light pours in from the kitchen windows.
Yorkies are small terriers with big, bold personalities. They are alert, affectionate and often very attached to their people, which makes a spot under the table, close to everyone, the perfect place to be. Their small size means they can be underfoot easily, so it helps to teach a young puppy a settle cue and give him a bed in the room where the family gathers.
Thanksgiving tables are full of dangers for dogs. Turkey bones, fatty skin, onions, grapes and raisins, and sweets with chocolate or xylitol are all foods to keep away. Guests may want to slip him bites, so it helps to ask them to refrain and offer a dog-safe chew instead. If your puppy gets into something he shouldn't, call your vet.
Right now he is calm and content, surrounded by familiar shoes and the sounds of the family. The feast above can wait, because the best company is right here at foot level.
