The Door Opened and a Tiny Yorkie Puppy Was Ready to Greet Everyone
The door swings open, and a small blue-and-gold Yorkshire Terrier puppy stands in the hallway with his ears pricked and his tail up. Outside, a smiling man and woman in warm jackets arrive with a foil-covered dish and a bag of groceries, glowing in the late-day sun. Shoes and boots line the floor, and a pumpkin and gourds decorate the porch, making a warm welcome.
Yorkies are alert, social little terriers who love to be the first to greet someone. They tend to be confident and can be quite vocal, which makes them good watchdogs, though early training helps teach them when to stop barking. Socializing a puppy with different people calmly helps him grow into a friendly, well-mannered adult.
Arrivals can be exciting, so be ready with a plan. Small puppies can slip out an open door, so use a leash or a baby gate while guests come in. Ask visitors to greet him calmly and let him sniff first, and keep an eye out for dropped food from the dishes they bring. A quiet room is helpful if the noise becomes too much for him.
For now, he stands with great pride, ready to meet his guests. Nobody could have a better welcome committee, even if it comes up to just above their ankles. Soon the hugs, the dishes and the stories will begin, and he will be in the middle of it.
