Dasher Put On the Antlers and Became the Smallest Reindeer
On a porch steps dusted with snow, a long-eared black and tan Dachshund puppy sits with a pair of soft brown reindeer antlers on his head. His eyes are round and earnest, his tan eyebrow dots stand out against the black coat, and his paws are tucked together. Behind him, a wreath hangs on the front door and a pot of evergreens holds a layer of frost.
Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers, and that explains their bold, curious nature and the way they love to dig and burrow. Their long backs are the breed's most famous feature, and also the part that needs care. Many vets recommend preventing jumps from heights, using ramps or steps for furniture, keeping the dog at a healthy weight, and supporting the chest and hindquarters when lifting. Ask your vet for tips about protecting your puppy's back as he grows.
Cold porch time should be short for small, low-slung dogs, since their bellies are close to the snow and they can chill quickly. Dry paws and tummy with a towel after any outing. This young fellow, whom we will call Dasher, has been cast as the smallest reindeer in the world. He takes the role very seriously, looking out from beneath his antlers like a tiny actor waiting for his cue. If reindeer ever needed a short-legged, long-bodied member of the team, he would be a great fit.
