Ebony Grabbed the Red Ribbon and Brought It Over Like a Prize
Long, curly ears frame the face of a black Cocker Spaniel who has just pulled a red ribbon out of a gift box. The ribbon hangs from his mouth, trailing back to the open box, and his brown eyes look toward the camera as though he is waiting for a reaction. Behind him is a decorated tree, a couch with a green throw, a plush hedgehog on the floor, and a table of wrapping supplies.
Cocker Spaniels were originally bred as bird dogs, so many of them love carrying things in their mouths. This is a natural retrieving instinct, and it can be steered into a game of fetch with a toy that is safe to chew. Their silky ears need regular cleaning and checking, since the long, covered shape can trap moisture. They are affectionate, eager to please dogs, and often very sensitive to the mood of their family.
Ribbon, however, is not a toy. If swallowed, it can cause serious blockages in the digestive tract, so it should not be left within a dog's reach, and a ribbon hanging from the mouth should never be pulled. If you suspect a dog has swallowed any, call your vet. Trade the ribbon for a treat or a toy, and tidy up as the presents get opened. We will call this proud retriever Ebony. For now she looks very pleased with her delivery, and the room is full of festive chaos.
