Pumpkin Skipped the Party and Found a Soft Pile of Coats
The party is going on somewhere else in the house, but the guest of honor is in the bedroom, asleep on a pile of coats. A big orange longhair lies curled up on green puffy jackets and dark coats, his eyes shut and his tail wrapped neatly around his hind legs. A table in the background holds glasses and folded sweaters, and the room has the soft look of a place that is far from the noise.
Many cats retreat to a quiet spot when the house is full of guests, and a pile of coats is a perfect choice because it is soft, warm, and smells like familiar people. It is a normal way for a cat to cope with excitement. If a cat hides during a gathering, let her be, and provide a quiet room with water, a litter box, and a cozy bed. Not every cat enjoys a crowd, and that is fine.
Remember that coats and bags can hold things that are unsafe for pets, such as gum, medicines, or candy in the pockets, so ask guests to keep their belongings out of reach. This is Pumpkin again, who prefers a nap to a party. He had a good look at the guests, accepted a few pats, and then found his own peaceful corner. The coat pile is his, and the party can continue without him for as long as he likes.
