Maybe Sat Beside the Orange Lights and Watched the Yard Go Quiet

AI imagetabby kittenhalloweenstring lights

On the top step of a wooden porch, a tiny grey tabby sits and looks out into the yard with wide, thoughtful eyes. Strings of orange lights loop along the railing and across the floor beside her, glowing against the weathered boards. A few dry maple leaves have blown onto the porch, and a little pumpkin and a front door with a black security gate sit in the background. Her stripes are bold and her whiskers catch the light.

String lights are a charming decoration, but they come with safety rules for pets. Cords can be chewed, and a bite into an electric line can cause burns or shock. Keep the lights up high or covered, unplug them when you cannot supervise, and offer plenty of cat toys to chew and bat instead. If your kitten mouths a cord, check her mouth gently and call your vet.

Kittens are drawn to little glowing things, and the tiny bulbs are as interesting to her as any bug. A kitten is also at her most curious at dusk, when many cats are naturally more active. We will call this porch sitter Maybe, because she looks like she is just about to decide something. She sits with her paws together, in no hurry, enjoying the orange glow and the crisp evening. It is a soft, peaceful moment on a quiet October porch.
