Nugget Took Over Candy Duty Before the First Trick-or-Treater Arrived

Right on the welcome rug, a tiny brown tabby sits next to a big bowl of wrapped candy, as serious as a security guard. Her ears are up, her stripes are bold, and her gaze is aimed at someone just out of view. The blue front door is open a crack, and behind her are a shoe rack, a basket of mittens and hats, and a pumpkin by the doorway. It looks like the busiest night of the year is about to start.

A candy bowl on the floor is a hazard for pets, since chocolate, raisins, and sugar-free sweets can all be harmful. Place the bowl on a table or shelf out of reach, and keep a stash of cat treats for your own animals. Wrappers can also be dangerous, so clean up quickly. If you suspect your pet has swallowed candy or wrappers, call your vet for guidance. An American Shorthair is often an easygoing cat, but a kitten is always curious.

Halloween night also means a lot of door opening, which is a risk for escape. Kittens are fast and small, so a gate or a quiet room away from the door can keep them safe while the trick-or-treaters come and go. We will call this little guard Nugget. For now she sits calmly, tail tucked, as the first knock approaches. Whether she is protecting the candy or just admiring the colors, she looks perfectly in charge.
