The Pie Was Cooling on the Counter When a Little White Face Appeared

A golden pie with a woven lattice crust is cooling on a wire rack, and a fluffy white Bichon Frise named Marshmallow has risen to the occasion. She stands on her hind legs with both front paws propped on the counter, dark eyes locked on the crust. The kitchen around her is busy: a cutting board with butter, a bowl, a spoon, fresh herbs and an amber evening glow through the window.

Bichons are cheerful, curious dogs, and a small one can be surprisingly good at reaching for things. A kitchen counter is full of hazards during holiday cooking, so it is smart to keep pies and other treats pushed far back. Pie fillings often contain sugar, spices, nutmeg or raisins, and some of those ingredients are not safe for dogs, so even a small lick is best avoided. Chocolate, xylitol sweeteners and grapes are especially risky. If your pet sneaks a bite of something questionable, call your vet for advice. A training mat or a spot on the kitchen floor where your dog earns a treat can make cooking calmer.

Marshmallow, of course, has no plans to take a bite. She is just checking the temperature in her own way and admiring the baker's craft. It is hard to blame her, because that crust looks perfect, and so does she.
