Four Warm Rolls, One Tiny Nose, and a Decision to Be Made

AI imagechihuahuathanksgivingdinner rolls

Four golden dinner rolls sit nestled in a cloth-lined basket, and a small cream Chihuahua named Churro has her nose practically buried in them. Her big ears flare out to the sides, her dark eyes look down with serious concentration, and her little paws are planted on the tabletop. Around the basket lie sprigs of dried herbs, a few mini pumpkins, a folded napkin and a plaid-covered chair, with a bright kitchen window glowing behind.

Chihuahuas are tiny but famously bold, and they have a strong sense of smell that tells them where the good stuff is. A warm bread basket is exactly that. Plain bread in a small bite is usually not a problem for most dogs, but rolls can be rich in butter, garlic or seasonings, and raw dough is dangerous because it can swell and cause serious trouble, so keep it far away. Because Chihuahuas are so small, a few bites of rich food can be a lot for their stomachs. A dog this size also feels the cold, so a warm blanket nearby is a good idea during a chilly day indoors.

Churro does not seem to be rushing. She breathes in the scent like a connoisseur, deciding which roll is the most promising. With a nose like that, it is a good thing she is small enough to be carried away by a gentle, laughing hand.
