The Tree Lights Went Missing, and the Saint Bernard Was Wearing Them

Warm white fairy lights wind around the head, shoulders and chest of a giant Saint Bernard named Moose, who lies on the floor looking a bit sheepish. The lights glow like tiny stars across his red and white coat, and his dark, sad eyes seem to say that he has no idea how this happened. Behind him are a couch, a toy basket, a rope toy and a decorated tree in the background.

Christmas lights are a real hazard for dogs, since cords can wrap around legs and necks, and chewing on a plugged-in string can lead to burns or shocks. If a dog is tangled, stay calm, unplug the lights and carefully remove them, never pulling tight. Placing the tree in a corner, running cords along walls and using cord covers all help. Saint Bernards are huge, gentle dogs, but big tails and big bodies knock things over easily, so make sure the tree is firmly anchored. Their thick coats can also hide tangles, so check the whole dog. If he seems hurt, call your vet.

Moose looks patient and gentle even when he is wrapped up like a present. He is a very good sport about it, and the lights flatter him a great deal. A gentle giant wearing holiday sparkle is hard to resist, and nobody in the house will be in any hurry to untangle him.
