A Tiny Yorkie Sat Under the Orange Lights Listening to the Night

Evening has settled over the porch, and a small Yorkshire Terrier puppy sits right in the middle of it, ears perked and eyes turned to the right. Strings of warm orange lights loop along the roof and railing, small pumpkins and gourds dot the floorboards, and a soft glow spills from the lantern by the door. The puppy's fur is a mix of steel blue and golden tan, a little fluffy and a little wild around the ears. The whole yard seems to hold its breath.

Yorkshire Terriers are tiny dogs, but they often have a large sense of purpose and a keen interest in sounds around them. That alertness means they may bark at passersby, so gentle training and rewards help teach calm greetings. Puppies need a lot of short play sessions and plenty of sleep. When decorating with string lights, remember that cords can be tempting to chew, and chewing a live wire is dangerous. Tape or cover cords, keep them out of reach, and unplug lights when you are not around. A quick safety check before the puppy goes out is time well spent.

We could call this watcher Ember, as the lights make his coat glow. He listens to the night with tilted ears and a little frown of concentration, as if the porch is his very own lookout tower. Something small and interesting is probably rustling in the leaves.
