Snow Began to Fall on Christmas Eve, and She Never Looked Away

Outside the big window, snow drifts down over a quiet yard, and a grey Exotic Shorthair sits on the sill with her round face tilted toward the glass. Her amber eyes follow the flakes, and her flat little nose is nearly touching the pane. Behind her the room is soft and a little untidy: a plaid blanket, a mug resting on the ledge, and in the far corner the faint glow of a small Christmas tree. It feels like the hour when everyone is full and sleepy and waiting for morning.

Exotic Shorthairs are often described as the easygoing cousins of Persians, with the same sweet, round face but a shorter coat that takes less work. They tend to be calm, affectionate, and happy to be near their people. That flat face means some of them are prone to tear staining, so wiping gently with a soft damp cloth helps, and it is worth asking your vet about any breathing or eye concerns. Window perches are wonderful for any indoor cat because watching weather and wildlife gives them something to do, so a cushioned seat by a window is a nice gift.

She seems in no hurry at all. The snow keeps falling, the house stays warm, and Christmas Eve is giving her exactly the show she wanted. Even the little tree in the corner seems to be keeping quiet so as not to disturb the view.
