The Stocking Was Meant for Candy, but an Abyssinian Climbed In
The stocking was meant for small gifts, but an Abyssinian has decided it is just his size. Only his head and a bit of chest show above the white cuff of the big red knit stocking, and his tall ears fan out like a pair of radar dishes. His green eyes stare straight ahead, solemn and a little proud. Behind him the living room is soft with afternoon light: a couch with a gray throw, a mug on a side table, and a scatter of keys and glasses nearby.
Cats love snug spaces because tight, enclosed spots make them feel secure and help them hold body heat. That is why boxes, bags, and stockings so often become favorite hiding places. Abyssinians in particular are active and curious, and they are known for squeezing into places that look much too small. If your cat chooses a stocking, make sure it is clean and has no bells, loose threads, or small decorations that could be chewed off. Stockings hung on a mantel should be hung high enough that the contents, especially chocolate or candy, stay out of reach.
He seems perfectly pleased with this arrangement. After all, a stocking is simply a cozy bed that happens to be red. His tail is surely tucked in somewhere below, out of sight. He even holds his chin level, like a small gift waiting to be unwrapped.
