Santa's Cookies Had a Visitor Before He Even Arrived
The plate of cookies has been waiting for Santa, but a white kitten with pink ears has arrived first. She leans over the edge of the plate with her nose just above a chocolate chip cookie, whiskers forward. The table is scattered with crumbs and a few pine needles, and a gray throw sits over the couch behind her, while a garland frames the kitchen shelves.
Cookie plates are one of the trickiest holiday temptations for pets. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, and raisins, macadamia nuts, and certain sweeteners also cause problems. Even a plain cookie has far more sugar and fat than a kitten should have. The easiest answer is to keep the plate up high or covered when no one is watching, and wipe crumbs from the table. A cat who likes to sniff and investigate is not naughty, just curious, and cats are drawn to the scent of butter and sugar. Offer a bit of her own kitten food or a safe treat instead. If your kitten gets into chocolate, call your vet right away.
The pale fluffy coat and pointed ears mean a kitten like this is hard to miss, even when she is trying to be sneaky.
Santa may have to share the plate tonight, but at least the kitten is only sniffing.
