A Single Green Bean Hit the Floor, and a Kitten Took Notice
One green bean has fallen on the kitchen floor, and a brown tabby kitten is down low and staring at it as if it might move. Her striped face is only inches from the bean, her ears are turned slightly sideways, and her paws are planted. Behind her, a pumpkin on a cabinet, a chair with a cloth over the back, and the soft light of a late afternoon fill the busy kitchen.
Kittens treat nearly anything that drops as prey, and a bean that rolls just a little is irresistible. Plain green beans are not poisonous to cats, but the version on the table is often cooked with butter, onions, garlic, or bacon, which can be a problem. Keeping the floor swept during a big meal is one of the simplest ways to protect a curious pet. Many vets suggest sticking with cat food as the main diet, and treats should be only a small part of calories, so ask your vet about safe snacks. A kitten who is stalking a bean is also practicing her hunting skills. A pounce toy or a rolling ball can turn the same instinct into fun.
Thanksgiving kitchens are full of tiny dropped items, and a kitten's eyes catch every one.
The bean has not moved, and neither has she, and the whole kitchen seems to wait for the pounce.
