An Abyssinian Guarded the Candy Bowl and Watched the Open Door
Next to a white bowl heaped with wrapped candy in orange, purple, and black foil, a ruddy Abyssinian cat sits at the entryway and looks out the open door. Her ears are alert, her golden eyes follow something on the street, and the sunlight spilling in lights up her coat. A hat rack with jackets, a pair of sneakers, a tote bag, and a few leaves create a cozy entry scene.
A candy bowl by the door is a classic Halloween sight, but candy is a real hazard for pets. Chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, sugar-free candy can contain xylitol, and wrappers can cause stomach blockages if swallowed. Keep the bowl on a high shelf or table, and clean up any dropped wrappers right away. If your cat eats candy or wrappers, call your vet. The open door is another concern, since visitors coming and going give a curious cat a chance to dart out. Abyssinians are active, alert cats who love watching everything, so a window perch is a safer place to observe the action.
Her alert posture suggests she is more interested in the street than the candy.
She is the guard of the doorway, and not a single piece of candy has been moved. Now and then she glances back at the bowl, just to be sure it is still sitting exactly where she left it.
