This British Shorthair Wears a Witch Hat and Is Not Amused About It
With a small black witch hat perched between her ears, a round-faced blue-grey cat sits on a hay bale and gives the world a look of deep, grumpy wisdom. Her amber eyes are narrowed just a bit, her cheeks are plush and round, and her paws are lined up neatly on the straw. Not a whisker is out of place, which makes the hat look even more official.
Behind her, a gray door and cream siding frame the porch, a green planter sits by the wall, and a pair of old boots rests near a few pumpkins. Fall leaves lie scattered in the corners. We'll call her Hazel. She has not decided whether she approves of Halloween, but she is willing to wear the hat.
British Shorthairs are sturdy, easygoing cats with dense, plush coats and calm personalities. They are usually affectionate without being clingy, and many dislike being carried around, so let her choose how close to get. Costumes should be treated with care: only use light, comfortable pieces, let your cat sniff them first, and take them off if she freezes, flattens her ears, or tries to wriggle away. Never leave a hat on an unsupervised cat, since elastic can snag or tangle. Hay bales and fall decorations are fun to explore, but dried corn stalks and decorative gourds should be kept out of reach if your cat likes to nibble. If she eats something odd, call your vet.
Hazel sits proudly on her straw throne, the most unimpressed witch on the block, and somehow that makes her perfect.
