A Basset Hound Wears a Dollop of Whipped Cream on His Nose

A dollop of whipped cream sits right on top of a tricolor Basset Hound's black nose, and he looks up with the most innocent eyes imaginable. His long ears hang like velvet curtains, his droopy cheeks are soft and wrinkled, and a sprinkle of cream clings to his chin. Just beside him, a lattice-topped pie sits on the counter with a smear of cream across the crust.

Behind him, a cutting board holds apple slices, a bowl of green grapes sits by a set of keys, and a blue towel is draped over the counter. Warm light fills the kitchen. We'll call him Waffles, after the pie, which was apparently a dessert of great interest. His tail may not be visible, but you can tell it's wagging.

Basset Hounds have one of the best noses in the dog world, second only to the bloodhound's, and they follow scents with great determination, which makes a pie on the counter very hard to ignore. A lick of plain whipped cream is usually harmless, but the rest of the pie could be a problem: sugar, spices, raisins, and certain sweeteners can upset a dog, and the grapes in the background are toxic to dogs and should be kept far from curious noses. Keep desserts back from the edge of the counter and call your vet if he ate pie or grapes. Bassets also gain weight easily, so treats should be few and small.

Waffles sits there with his creamy nose, wide-eyed and hopeful, an innocent dog with a very frosted face.
