One Sock Went Missing, Then Another. Then She Walked In.
Bright yellow eyes shine from a black cat holding a whole bundle of socks in her mouth, gray and striped ones hanging down like a trophy. Behind her, a basket of laundry, folded blankets and a lamp's warm glow set a cozy evening scene. She stares straight ahead with total commitment, a thief who has not yet been challenged.
Plenty of cats carry things around, and it is a very natural behavior. Cats are hunters by nature, and carrying prey back to a safe spot is part of that instinct. Socks smell strongly like their person, which can be comforting, and they are soft and easy to carry. Some cats even yowl proudly while carrying their treasure, which owners often find endearing. The main concern is chewing or swallowing fabric, because it can cause a blockage and require urgent vet care, so keep socks in a closed hamper.
It can help to offer a toy that offers a similar thrill, like a small plush on a string, and to play a short hunting game every evening. Many cats will bring their prize and drop it at your feet, which is a cat's version of a gift.
Our little burglar looks quite pleased with the haul and not at all rushed. We can only imagine where the other half of the pair went.
