A Sphynx Stood Guard Over a Stolen Sandwich When the Door Opened

AI imagesphynxcaught in the actkitchen

Both eyes are round, both enormous ears are tilted forward, and one slender paw rests protectively on a half-eaten sandwich lying on the kitchen floor. Lettuce, tomato, and a bit of meat peek out of the bun, and crumbs lead back to the counter like a trail of tiny footprints. The Sphynx is grey and wrinkled, bathed in warm afternoon light, and frozen so completely she looks like a statue titled The Moment Before.

Sphynx cats have no coat to speak of, which makes them feel warm to the touch and means they often seek out sunny windowsills and cozy blankets. They are typically energetic, social, and endlessly curious, and they love being close to the action. Their skin also needs a little extra care, such as occasional baths and protection from too much sun, so ask your vet about a routine that suits her. As for the sandwich, human food is not made for cats. Onions, garlic, and certain spreads can be harmful to them, and rich deli meats are very salty. If your cat swipes a bite of something questionable, keep an eye on her and call your vet if you are worried. Putting lunch out of reach, or covered on a high counter, avoids the whole scene.

For now, she is standing guard over her prize and hoping no one walks in. Her face says she knows exactly what is about to happen.
