The Delivery Box Arrived Whole. The Weimaraner Had Other Plans.
Silver-gray from nose to tail, the Weimaraner leans toward the lens with a long, serious face and soft, amber eyes. On the carpet beside her lies a cardboard box reduced to a heap of jagged squares and flaps. Behind them, a laundry basket and a stuffed toy bunny sit quietly on the floor, and a sofa with pillows waits in the background like a bored audience.
Weimaraners are athletic hunting dogs known for their ghostly coat and their loyalty, and they often follow their people from room to room. They are also known for needing plenty of exercise and company. When a Weimaraner is left with nothing to do, a delivery box can seem like a gift from the universe. Shredding cardboard is usually harmless in small amounts, but swallowing big chunks can cause trouble, so keep an eye out and call your vet if your dog seems off. A long run beforehand makes quiet afternoons easier.
We will call her Ghost. She holds the pose of a dog who knows that she made a mess but also feels that the box began the conversation. Her ears hang low and her gaze stays on us, which is the Weimaraner way of asking for understanding. The bunny in the corner, thankfully, appears to have been spared, and the sofa cushions are still all in one piece.
