The Mail Came Through the Door. The Husky Got to It First.
The mail arrived this morning and now it is everywhere. A grey and white Siberian Husky named Luna sits in a drift of torn envelopes, letters and flyers, her ice-blue eyes opened wide as if she has just heard the front door. Pieces of paper cover the rug and spill across the couch, and she looks like she is waiting for someone to say something first.
Huskies are intelligent, energetic and sometimes mischievous dogs with striking eyes and a thick double coat. They are also talented escape artists and enthusiastic shredders when they are bored. Many dogs are drawn to the mail slot because the sound of the delivery and the smell of strangers are exciting, and the pile that drops through is an easy target. A mail basket or a box outside the door can save your bills.
A little paper is usually fine, but dogs should not eat a lot of it, and some mail may include coated flyers or ink. Pick up the scraps and call your vet if your dog swallowed a lot and seems upset. Huskies need plenty of daily exercise, so longer walks and active games can reduce the urge to redecorate.
Luna sits tall in the snowy mess, looking as if she just finished important work. Maybe the electric bill was never meant to be read anyway.
