A German Shepherd Looks Away From the Cake. His Paws Tell the Truth.
Seated on the cool tile of the kitchen floor, a sable German Shepherd looks away from the room with a distant, serious stare. Both front paws are coated in thick white cake frosting, and a few more smears lie on the floor beside him. His tall, alert ears point forward, his dark saddle of fur gleams, and the wooden cabinets behind him are lit by morning light. He seems to be pretending that the paws belong to someone else.
German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal, and eager to work, which is why they have long served as police and service dogs. That sharp mind needs plenty of exercise and training to stay happy, and a bored shepherd can find creative ways to entertain himself. Cake is not a good snack for dogs. Sugar and fat can upset the stomach, and ingredients like chocolate, raisins, or sweetener such as xylitol can be dangerous, so call your vet if he ate any. Keeping food on high counters and training a solid leave it command are the best protection against a surprise dessert.
He wears the frosting like a pair of fancy gloves and keeps his chin high. The cake is lost, but his dignity is not, at least in his own view. A quick wipe and a game of fetch will probably restore the peace.
