A Black Cat Took the Chef's Spot on the Stove and Looked Very Proud
Standing tall on the black stove top, a black cat stares straight ahead with glowing golden eyes. A pan of sizzled onions and peppers sits next to his paws, and tiles, a roll of paper towels, and a cutting board line the counter behind him. His coat is as glossy as the burners beneath him, and his white-whiskered face looks innocent, but the position is anything but. He seems quite proud of his lofty view.
Cats love high places, and a stove top, with its warmth and smells, can look like a perfect perch. It is also dangerous. A hot burner or pan can burn paws, and a cat can accidentally turn on a knob. It is safest to keep cats off the stove, cover the burners, and remove knobs or use stove guards when no one is cooking. Many cooked foods, such as onions and garlic, are harmful to cats, so call your vet if he ate some. A tall cat tree near a window gives him a safe high spot.
He keeps still and calm, as though cooking is his full-time job. Dinner will have to be started again, and the stove will need a thorough cleaning. For a safer future, he deserves a perch of his own, high enough to see everything and far enough from the heat.
